Brother, can you spare a brain?
joked the toad
waiting in line
at the airport
for far too long.
I can’t take my eyes off of the future
& inevitable death,
Are you afraid to be one with the earth?
I replied:
I’m frightened of the unknown,
the fear of friendship,
someone getting too close.
I know what you mean,
burped the toad,
It’s good to be scared
of the unknown
and other people,
it keeps your edge,
your guard.
I agree, nodding my head vigorously,
but I’m hanging on this cross
and these nails hurt
and I anxiously await
the end of this
crucifixion play.
Not yet, declared the toad,
Does death make you nervous?
Is wisdom a lie?
Are prayers unheeded?
I don’t think about death
and I don’t know anything
about wisdom…
but, I prayed in the desert
for 40 days
and these nails really hurt.
A little more time,
croaked the toad,
You’re not quite ready
for the apocalypse.
